Diasporan Olympiad American CYM members participated in the Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiad, organized by USCAK in Philadelphia, U.S.A. «Hey na Ivana!» Ivana Kupala is one of Ukraine's most ancient summertime events, filled with fascinating rituals and fun traditions for the young at heart. Kyiv's druzhynnyky celebrated the holiday together this year... We continue our series of articles, written by CYM members, about exceptional people and events that CYM commemorates in the year 2008... We commemorate in 2008... The 60th Anniversary of CYM in Great Britain For over sixty years the Ukrainian Youth Association has worked without pause with many thousands of children and young adults of Ukrainian descent in Great Britain. Roman Panas shares with our readers a brief history of our organization in this European country... «We are all your children, Ukraine!» We call upon all druchynnyky to participate! This project aims to conduct a fourteen day educational-recreational summer camp for children from various regions of Ukraine, along with 50 children from families with special needs. What Dontsov told CYM members Not everyone is aware of the words that the great ideologist Dmytro Dontsov spoke to CYM members, when he addressed them on the anniversary of the Kharkiv Trials. Krylati ¹2 The second issue (March & April 2008) of CYM's new «Krylati» magazine is now available at news stands in Ukraine. Winter Camp 2008 "When I travel to camp, I know that its success depends on three things - the people... the program... and the place..." Visit with the participants of this year's Winter Druzhynnyk Camp in Ukraine. Derby: Remembering the Victims The Derby branch of CYM participated in the Holocaust memorial week, informing others about the terrors and atrocities which took place in Ukraine during the Holodomor. Ukrainians and the local community in Derby remembered and paid their respects to the 7 million victims who starved to death. CYM's General Meeting in Canada The National Executive of the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada will hold its annual General Meeting from Friday, February 29 through Sunday March 2, 2008 in the city of Hamilton, Ontario. An Eve of Poetry The Khmelnytskyj oseredok of the Ukrainian Youth Association conducted an Evening of Poetry at the «Kut» Theater in honor of Vasyl Stus, who would have celebrated his 70th birthday this year. CYM members read works of this great Ukrainian... Kyiv: Young Potters Learning pottery from Master-Class Ceramic Artist Anatolij Bajda was an experience, mainly because Mr. Bajda is an fascinating, energetic artist who is full of fun and humor. He taught us much about his art, its history, and then he began to uncover for us the secrets of talking with the earth.

A New Children's magazine: «Krylati» We're excited to announce that in late 2007 CYM will introduce a new children's magazine - "Krylati". Yes, we're annointing something very new with a name that's already familiar to you. But this will be a completely new magazine for children of ages 6 to 10. But in the new Krylati everyone will find something of interest, including parents, vykhovnyky, and you, too! Project «Soprychastya» Join us! We call upon CYM members in all countries of the world!   The Ukrainian Youth Association in Ukraine, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Holodomor, is initiating a project called «Soprychastya», as a sign of spiritual unity with those generations of Ukrainians who suffered through the times of the Great Holodomor and Terror. Svitova Uprava's Plenum A Plenum of CYM's Svitova Uprava took place on 8-10 November 2007 in the city of Kyiv. Participants included representatives of CYM in Australia, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Ukraine and the United States. The agenda included the CYM uniform, a new «Krylati» magazine, a new Svitova Uprava member, revisions to the Pravylnyk Yunatstva and much more. CYM Ukraine elects new Board On 3-4 November CYM members from throughout Ukraine met in Lviv for the XII National Convention of CYM in Ukraine. Check here for a listing of the new officers of the National Executive. CYM members congratulate and extend warm wishes to newly elected President of CYM in Ukraine, Svyatoslav Lypovetskyj! An Act of Vandalism The Ukrainian Youth Association's statement concerning the act of vandalism by „Eurasian Union of Youth” members on Hoverla. Hetman Awards The 7th Annual Hetman Awards Banquet honoring outstanding volunteer leaders for their significant contributions to the Ukrainian community was held recently in Edmonton. Three of this year's HETMAN AWARDS were awarded to members of CYM: Wasil Bahniuk (posthumously), Marusia Shysh, and Roman Brytan. The Holodomor The Holodomor of 1932-33 that encompassed a significant part of Ukraine was neither an incidental act of nature or social phenomenon. It was the direct result of terror-by-hunger, created by a totalitarian government, thus a genocide. All this was planned with one purpose – if not to destroy, then to bring to her knees, a freedom-loving nation. CYM Publishes Comics Book CYM members from Ternopil, Ukraine recently headed an initiative to print a collection of comics titled "Ukraine in Combat", which brings to life the historic struggles of soldiers in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Ellenville's Zlet Nearly three hundred children participated in this year's XLVIII Zlet in Ellenville, New York. Philadelphia's oseredok made this year's strongest showing, and earned itself a first place victory over ten competing oseredok teams. Congratulations! Yaroslav Stetsko: Known and Unkown January 19th, 2007 marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of Yaroslav Stetsko. Somehow the anniversary has added neither a new historical awareness nor a discovery of the person who was a leader that left his mark on both Ukrainian socio-political life and the life of our organization, CYM. What hinders our discovery of this personage and facts that we did not know about him? Read on... Canada Gathering CYM Canada's National Executive held its XVIII Triennial General Meeting from Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29, 2007. The General Meeting washeld at the Holy Dormition of the Mother of God church hall in Mississauga, Ontario. Debutante Ball To celebrate the introduction of the youth members of CYM and plast into the community, a longstanding tradition of the Ukrainian Community in Sydney has been to hold a Debutante Ball. This ball is a forum for the presentation of young ladies who, reaching their 16th year of age, enter into a new stage of their lives. - Also check out the U.S. Debutatante Ball... Ukraine: Vykhovnyky In Morshyn, from 27 to 29 April, twenty three young vykhovnyky from Ukraine's Lviv oseredok were joined by vykhovnyky from neighboring Drohobych and Dolyna oseredoks for a seminar and training sessions. Argentina CYM Argentina will hold its Twenty First General Meeting on June 3, 2007 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center "Prosvita". The UPA: Ukrainian Heroes This year we commemorate the 65th anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, known by its Ukrainian acronym, UPA. We honor the heroes that fought for Ukraine's freedom, and who put down their lives for their brethren. Olena Teliha - Ukrainian Heroine Born in a foreign country, raised in a foreign culture, she would go on to become a hero of the Ukrainian people. Olena lived and perished showing us all a road that we might take: Not by word, but by deed; Not in fear, but in battle!... A Letter to the President April 28th of this year marks the 60th anniversary of "Aktsia Wisla" by the Polish authorities in the western Ukrainian lands. Nelya Lavrinenko, head of CYM in Ukraine, writes to President Yushchenko... Sign the Petition! Residents of Great Britain, do not be indifferent, sign the petition to the British Prime Minister to have the Great Famine of 1932-33 recognised as genocide against the Ukrainian people! Ukraine's history should be honored, and the Holodomor properly recognized by the British Government. Pavlushkov - CYM's Founder The year 2007 marks the 70th anniversary of the tragic death Mykola Pavlushkov, founder of the Ukrainian Youth Association, murdered along with thousands of Ukrainians in Soviet concentration camps. Until recently the date and place of his death remained unknown. Only after archives were partially made available to the public did we learn that his last worldly "home" was the Karelian tract called Sandarmokh, which translates to Bear Mountain...
